WEBDec 16, 2012 · AD Machinery bought WellsIndex in 1987 and moved it to Muskegon, MI. Your model 40 shipped in June 1955. It shipped with a table power feed, 1/2 HP single phase motor and # 9 Brown and Sharpe spindle taper. The spindle/quill feed was an option that was not ordered on this mill. A manual for your machine is plus shipping.

WEBJan 22, 2006 · The 847 we have now was sitting next to a bridgeport in a shop we were sharing for a while and it made the bridgeport look like an Enco benchtop mill. They are some beautiful beefy machines. Ironhead, buy the damn thing, WellsIndex's are fantastic machines, the 860 looks to be the same as an 847 with a horizontal spindle on it.

WEB, 09:41 PM. Index and later WellsIndex machines are high quality mills. The model 555 is a very rigid machine, much more so that a typical BP. Its designed much more like the Gorton millers. No personal experience with one so I can't give you any pointers.

I have installed several 3axis (quill) DRO's on Bridgeports their clones but the Wells pose some challenges, especially on the quill and/or knee.
