My 97 Legacy Outback with 220,000 miles on it is making some not so great noises and I am not able to tell if it is wheel bearings, cv shafts or the drive shaft. It is a clicking noise similar to what a bad cv sounds like, but it clicks when I am going straight and doesn't seem to get worse when I turn.

Solid shafts are needed at the wheels because of the added torque at the wheel. Your driveshaft "gears down" at the differential...amplifying your torque by whatever your gear ratio is ie. :1, 4:88:1 etc.
